Thierry Henry:
Making his name in the halls of fame in football, Thierry Henry is one of the youngest sportsmen and a living icon respected as other legendary names like Pele, Maradona, Ronaldhino and Etoo. The Frenchman was born in Les Ulis, Essonne, France to parents Maryse and Antoine Henry on August 17 1977. As a child he grew up in an unsafe and a low-class neighbourhood but he was a happy child who loved playing everywhere as long as it was not on the football pitch, he was educated at the Clairefont Academy but was never one for books as he received one bad grade after the other. At the time football had a fair penetration in the region and many families encouraged their sons to take an active role in it. For Henry it was no different as his father talked him into trying the game but an adamant Henry was not looking to change his mind, Antoine Henry persisted that his son should try it out since football was the only way to get out of poverty and stay away from teen crime. This argument worked and Henry decided to take part in one of the training sessions in his neighbourhood, this was the beginning of a life-long love and soon enough he was spending his free-time from school in the game. Although he had earlier been disinterested in the game it was discovered that the young boy was actually talented as he proved to be an unrivalled scorer at friendly games. Henry was spotted by talent scouts and in 1983 he was offered a striker’s position at a local team that was named CO Les Ulis, with him on the squad the team became one of the best and unrivalled in a reign that lasted for six years. In 1989 Henry moved to US Palaiseau, then Viry-Chbtillon and finally he ended his line of youth teams in 1992 at Clairefontaine.
After stints in clubs like Monaco and Juventus from 1992, Henry gained fame after he moved to English side team Arsenal in 1999, as part of the junior team he was coached by his former Monaco manager Arsene Wenger who on noticing the under-utilised talent of the new entrant he immediately put him on the senior team. This was the beginning of a series of wins for the team with Henry as the main striker, in the 2001-02 season Arsenal beat their arch rivals Manchester United and Liverpool to finish top of the FA Cup table. The next season was no different as Henry led his team to retain the FA Cup, by then his goal scoring had put him above Arsenal’s former striker Nicolas Anelka and nominations for the FIFA World Player begun to streak in.He continued with a high scoring record for the team until 2007 when he made a surprise and controversial move to Spanish side Barcelona, in 2010 Henry moved to the New York Red Bulls.
Henry also plays for the French National team and he has represented the country in tournaments like the 2003 Confederations Cup, the Euro 2000 and Euro 2004 Championship and the FIFA World Cup in 2002, 2006 and 2010.For his outstanding role in the game Henry was knighted with the Chevalier of the Ligion d'honneur in 1998.
